Nalanda initiated this innovative program in 2001. The intervention in the Maqtab-Madarsa system aims at bringing those children under the fold of primary education who has so far received only religious teaching and transforming the mudaris (teachers of madarasas) into trained skilled primary level teachers. Since the inception of the programme in Uttar Pradesh and Bihar 943muderris (teachers) from 257Madarsas of 40 blocks of 5 districts have been given basic training on providing elementary education in mathematics, language and other primary level subjects.  Groups of trainers of teachers from within the community have been also formed in all the five districts, so that this intervention can be replicated. The intervention has taken on the shape of a project by itself, and given the positive response, is proposed to be pursued more vigorously in the future. A constant follow-up has resulted in positive changes among the Muderris (teachers) who have shown their interest not only in primary education but also in child centered teaching learning process. For providing a constant academic support to trained Madarsa teachers 34 clusters have been formed at the local level. These clusters also function as units advocating for primary education in the Maqtab-Madarsa system. Currently, the project reaches 42523 children directly or indirectly of the Muslim community in rural areas.

Under the program Nalanda takes a number of systematic intervention steps. These include a four-day orientation session, and a five day-subject specific session with the teachers of the Madarsas. These sessions are accepted as a standard format for the intervention. Due to these dual set of sessions the capacity of the teachers increase. Besides the teachers, the beneficieries of this added capacity are also the students.

In the last three years Nalanda has also been in the process of selecting a handful of high-performing Madarsas as ‘Model Madarsas’. These Madarsas were conceived to be groomed so that they may gradually be developed as resource centers for Madarsas around them. This was also keeping in mind the sustainability aspects of the program. As of now there are around 41 such Model Madarsas and more are being selected for grooming them as centers of excellence. Each Model is conceived within a cluster of Madarsas. Simultaneously, to increase the intensity and sustainability of the intervention, Nalanda is gradually developing a resource group that is gradually being strengthened through various training and capacity building inputs.
