Our Programs

Within the field of primary education, education for the girl child assumes critical importance both from the perspective of women’s empowerment and universalization of education. In states, such as Uttar Pradesh, this is particularly so, not only because the overall literacy rates and percentage of school going children are low compared to national averages, but also there are strong biases within society about the role of women in general and the role of education in a girl child’s life in particular.

Since its inception, education for the girl child has been a focus area for Nalanda’s interventions. Nalanda developed a model in 2006 to enhance the access and quality of primary education for the girl child (in the 8-14 age group) starting with Sitapur district in Uttar Pradesh, which scores very low on female literacy.

The program establishes alternative schools in different villages in the district of Sitapur (U.P.) and Ranchi (Jharkhand) to provide education to the girl children between the ages of 8-14 years.

The children are taught in these centers using a variety of quality and interactive education processes for a period of four years before they are mainstreamed into class six of the formal schooling system after appearing for Class V Board Examinations. Dropout rates at these centers are very low as the students and their parents take a high interest in the teaching learning processes. Gradually, after seeing the desirable functionality of these centers, community itself has come forward in a big way to support any need gaps at these centers.

Nalanda not only provides some functional hard components for the centers but has also developed teaching learning materials and books for these centers. The books ‘HisabKitab’, ‘HanshiKhushi ABC’, ‘HanshiKhushi’ and ‘JaanoSamjho’ have been developed by Nalanda for various subjects and are readily accepted by the students at the alternative learning centers because of their user-friendly explanation on topics and attractive designs. Besides, Nalanda provides capacity building inputs to the appointed teachers through residential training on a regular and systematic basis so as to ensure quality learning at the centers.
